Dental Crowns in Katy, TX

Dental Crowns

A cap that goes over a tooth too damaged for a filling, matched to the colour of the ones beside it. Planned by Dr. Dave Cho, DMD.

Is this you

Is this the treatment you need?

A crown is what a tooth gets when there is not enough of it left to hold a filling.

01

A cracked or broken tooth

Cracked, chipped, or worn down by grinding. A crown rebuilds the shape.

02

Decay a filling cannot hold

When more of the tooth is filling than tooth, it breaks under pressure.

03

A tooth after a root canal

A treated tooth is brittle. The crown is what keeps it in service.

04

A bridge or an implant

A crown anchors a bridge, and a crown is the visible half of an implant.

The practice’s own reasons for recommending one

  • ProtectA tooth weakened by decay, trauma or a large filling, before it fractures.
  • RestoreA tooth cracked, chipped, or worn down by bruxism or age.
  • SupportA tooth carrying more filling material than natural structure.
  • AnchorThe teeth either side of a gap, holding a bridge in place.
  • CoverAn implant post, once it has integrated with the jawbone.
  • ImproveA misshapen, misaligned or severely stained tooth.

The Treatment

What it is, and what it involves.

What is a dental crown?

A cap that fits over a damaged, decayed or unattractive tooth and restores its shape, its strength and its appearance. Made to match the colour of the teeth around it.

In the practice’s words

A dental crown is a “cap” that fits over a damaged, decayed, or unattractive tooth to restore its shape, strength, and appearance. Designed to match the natural color of your teeth, crowns provide a permanent solution to a variety of dental problems. At Mason Park Dental, we craft custom crowns for teeth using advanced technology and high-quality materials like porcelain, ceramic, or metal.

Dental crowns are often recommended when a tooth cannot be restored with a simple filling. They offer both functional and cosmetic benefits, ensuring that your tooth can withstand normal chewing forces while also blending seamlessly with your natural teeth.

Included in a crown at this practice

  • 01Consultation and digital x‑rays
  • 02Local anaesthetic for the preparation
  • 03A core buildup, where the tooth needs one
  • 04A temporary crown while the lab works
  • 05Fit, shade and bite checked before it is bonded

Why This One

What it does for you.

A crown is the restoration that does both jobs at once: it holds the tooth together, and it looks like the tooth did.

Instruments coming out of the sterilizer

Chewing, back to normal

A stable structure you can bite on without thinking about it.

Full coverage, not a patch

The crown wraps the tooth, so pressure is spread instead of concentrated.

Matched to the teeth beside it

Porcelain and ceramic take a shade. Nothing announces itself.

Ten to fifteen years, or longer

With brushing, flossing and regular checkups. Longer is common.

Consultation and examination

Digital x‑rays and a full look at the tooth, then the materials that would suit it.

A digital scan taken from the chair
02

Tooth preparation

A thin layer of enamel off, a buildup if the tooth needs one, then impressions. Under local anaesthetic.

03

A temporary crown

It protects the prepared tooth and lets you eat and speak while the lab makes the real one.

The permanent crown

Fit, shape, colour and bite checked, adjusted if needed, then bonded. Usually a few weeks later.

The full detail of each visit

Step 1: Comprehensive consultation and examination. Dr. Dave Cho will perform a complete evaluation of the affected tooth, using digital X-rays and advanced diagnostic tools to assess the extent of damage or decay. During this visit we discuss your symptoms and concerns, evaluate the tooth’s structural integrity, and explore different types of crowns — porcelain, ceramic, zirconia, or porcelain-fused-to-metal. We’ll explain the advantages of each option based on your specific needs, budget, and cosmetic preferences.

Step 2: Tooth preparation. Once we agree on the best crown material and approach, we prepare the tooth: carefully reshaping it by removing a thin layer of enamel so the crown fits comfortably and functions naturally, performing a core buildup if necessary to provide a solid foundation, and taking precise impressions of the prepared tooth and the teeth around it. These impressions guide the dental lab technicians. We always focus on preserving as much natural tooth structure as possible. You’ll receive local anesthesia during the preparation to keep the process pain-free.

Step 3: Temporary crown placement. While your permanent crown is being crafted at our partner dental laboratory, a temporary crown is placed over the prepared tooth. It protects the tooth from sensitivity, bacteria and damage, maintains normal appearance, and allows normal function for eating and speaking. Avoid sticky or hard foods, and be gentle when flossing around it.

Step 4: Final crown placement. Dr. Dave Cho removes the temporary crown and cleans the tooth surface, then checks the fit, shape, color, and bite of the permanent crown. Minor adjustments are made if needed. Once everything looks right, the crown is permanently bonded in place, and your bite and alignment are double-checked so your mouth closes comfortably — no uneven pressure, no irritation.

The Alternatives

How it compares.

Four materials, chosen to the tooth

Where the tooth sits, what it has to withstand, and how much it shows all change the answer.

  • PorcelainHighly esthetic. Ideal for front teeth, where appearance is critical.
  • Porcelain‑fused‑to‑metalStrength and durability with a natural look. Front or back.
  • ZirconiaExtremely strong and fracture‑resistant. For molars, where chewing pressure is greatest.
  • GoldDurability and longevity, for patients who need a robust restoration.

The Cost

What it costs, before it starts.

The practice writes the estimate down before the work is scheduled. What it comes to depends on the material, where the tooth sits, and whether it needs a root canal or a buildup first.

In writingBefore the work

An upfront estimate at the consultation, itemised, so nothing on the bill is a surprise.

◆

What moves the number

Material choice, the tooth’s position, and any root canal or core buildup it needs first.

Insurance and financing

Most major dental plans are accepted, and we check your benefits with you. Financing and the savings plan both apply.

Questions

Questions patients ask before they decide.

What are dental crowns used for?

Dental crowns are used to cover and protect damaged teeth, restore their function, enhance appearance, and cap dental implants.

How long do dental crowns last?

With proper care, dental crowns can last between 10 to 15 years or even longer. Longevity depends on the material, where the tooth sits in the mouth, and personal habits like grinding or clenching.

Does getting a dental crown hurt?

Getting a dental crown is typically painless thanks to local anesthesia. Some mild sensitivity afterward is normal but temporary.

Can a dental crown be replaced?

Yes. If your crown becomes damaged or worn over time, Dr. Dave Cho can replace it. Crowns are durable but not indestructible — accidents, excessive wear, or biting on hard objects can damage one. If yours is broken or loose, contact the practice promptly so the tooth underneath is not harmed.

Are there alternatives to dental crowns?

Depending on the damage, treatments like dental bonding or veneers may be options, but crowns provide superior strength for weakened teeth.

How do I take care of a crown?

Brush and floss around the crowned tooth daily to prevent decay and gum disease. Use a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste so you do not scratch the surface of a porcelain crown. Avoid sticky or hard foods that can dislodge or damage it, wear a night guard if you grind your teeth, and keep up regular examinations and professional cleanings.
