Porcelain Veneers

Thin ceramic shells bonded to the front of the teeth. Stain-resistant, and made to reflect light the way enamel does.

Is this you

Healthy teeth that look wrong.

The practice’s own condition, and the whole test: veneers may be ideal if your teeth are healthy, but stained, gapped, crooked or chipped. A veneer over a problem tooth is a problem with a shell on it.

01

Stained

Stubborn discolouration that whitening has not shifted.

02

Gapped

Small gaps between the front teeth, closed without moving anything.

03

Crooked

Minor misalignment. For real crowding, Invisalign® moves the teeth instead of covering them.

04

Chipped or cracked

Several front teeth at once. For a single small chip, bonding is cheaper and faster.

What the practice says veneers make teeth look

  • StraighterMinor misalignment corrected by the shape of the shell rather than by moving the tooth.
  • More evenLength and width evened out across the teeth that show.
  • WhiterAnd they stay that way — porcelain is stain-resistant in a way enamel is not.
  • IntactChips and cracks covered, so the tooth reads as whole again.

The Treatment

What it is, and what it involves.

Four porcelain veneers on a black surface

What is a porcelain veneer?

A thin, durable, tooth-coloured shell, custom-fabricated and then bonded onto the front of the tooth. The improvement is immediate, because the shell arrives finished.

In the practice’s words

Porcelain dental veneers are a type of cosmetic dental solution. Veneers are thin, durable, tooth-colored “shells.” After being custom-fabricated, they are bonded onto the front of your tooth. Veneers look natural and beautiful for an immediate improvement in the appearance of your smile.

These ultra-thin, custom-crafted ceramic shells correct issues like chips, cracks, stubborn discoloration, small gaps, and even minor misalignments. They are stain-resistant and designed to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel, giving you a flawless yet natural-looking smile. With veneers, it’s possible to completely reinvent your smile with minimal alteration to your natural teeth.

What makes a veneer look like a tooth rather than a nail

  • TranslucencyPorcelain is designed to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel. Opaque material is what makes bad veneers obvious.
  • Custom fabricationEach shell made for one tooth, in a laboratory, from impressions of your mouth.
  • Minimal alterationThe practice’s own phrase. The less removed from the tooth underneath, the better the long-term outcome.
  • Stain resistanceThey do not pick up coffee and wine the way enamel and resin do.

Why This One

What it does for you.

Veneers are the biggest cosmetic commitment the practice offers, and the one that changes the most in a single step.

Several problems at once

Chips, cracks, discolouration, small gaps and minor misalignment, all corrected by the same treatment.

Ten to fifteen years, or more

Against three to seven for bonding. That difference is most of what you are paying for.

The colour holds

Stain-resistant porcelain, so the shade you chose is the shade you keep.

An immediate change

The shells arrive finished. When they are bonded, the result is there.

It still looks like you

Flawless yet natural-looking is the stated goal, and it is a real distinction.

Care is ordinary

Brushing, flossing and regular professional cleanings and exams. Nothing special.

Keeping them

Porcelain veneers can last for years with proper care. Continue brushing, flossing, and regular professional cleanings and exams — the veneer will not decay, but the tooth under it and the gum around it still can.

The habits that chip bonding chip porcelain too: biting nails, chewing pens, opening things with your teeth. If you grind, a night guard protects the investment.

The Alternatives

How it compares.

Veneers, against bonding.

VeneersBonding
Higher cost.More affordable.
Multiple visits, with lab work between.A single visit.
May require enamel removal.Minimally invasive.
Ten to fifteen years, or more.Three to seven years.
Moderate to major cosmetic change.Minor flaws.

This is the practice’s own comparison, including the enamel row. Enamel does not grow back, which is the one line on this table worth sitting with before you decide.

Do these first, if they apply

Veneers are usually the last step of a plan rather than the first. Three things change what you will need.

  • HealthDecay and gum disease treated first. The condition is healthy teeth, and it is not negotiable.
  • PositionInvisalign® first if the teeth need moving. Straightening changes which teeth show and how much shell each needs.
  • ColourWhiten first. Porcelain does not lighten later, so the veneers are matched to the shade you have settled on.

The Cost

What it costs, before it starts.

Veneers are quoted per tooth, and how many teeth show when you smile is not always how many you think.

Questions

Questions patients ask before they decide.

Am I a candidate?

Veneers may be ideal if your teeth are healthy but stained, gapped, crooked or chipped. Healthy is the condition — decay or gum disease is treated before any cosmetic work goes over it.

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Ten to fifteen years or more with proper care, against three to seven for bonding. Keep brushing, flossing and coming for regular professional cleanings and exams.

Will enamel be removed?

It may be. Veneers may require enamel removal, where bonding is minimally invasive. Enamel does not grow back, so this is worth understanding fully before you decide — the practice’s stated aim is minimal alteration to your natural teeth.

Will they look fake?

They are designed to mimic the light-reflecting properties of natural enamel, which is what separates a natural-looking veneer from an obvious one. The stated goal is flawless yet natural-looking.

Do veneers stain?

Porcelain is stain-resistant, so it holds its colour better than enamel or resin. That also means it will not lighten with whitening later, which is why whitening comes first.

Should I get veneers or bonding?

Bonding suits minor flaws: one visit, minimally invasive, more affordable, three to seven years. Veneers suit moderate to major cosmetic change across several teeth: multiple visits, higher cost, ten to fifteen years or more. Dr. Dave Cho will tell you which case yours is.
