What is a dental implant?
A biocompatible titanium post placed in the jawbone, which the bone grows onto over a few months — osseointegration. The visible tooth is a crown, a bridge or a denture fixed on top of it.

Smoking, alcohol and why they matter more here
Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can dramatically increase the risk of dental implant failure. The chemicals in tobacco products interfere with the body’s natural healing process, making it harder for the implant post to properly fuse with the jawbone.
If you smoke, it’s recommended to quit at least two weeks before your implant procedure to improve healing, and to avoid smoking during recovery — nicotine restricts blood flow to the gums, increasing the risk of infection, gum recession, and implant failure. Alcohol slows down the body’s ability to heal and may irritate the gums. Studies show that dental implant failure rates are significantly higher in smokers compared to non-smokers.
