Eating with them, the first month
Your mouth and the muscles in it need time to adapt. Four habits make that faster.
- Start softMashed potato, well-cooked vegetables, yogurt, eggs, oatmeal. Nothing that needs force.
- Small bitesCut food up, chew slowly, and bite with the side teeth rather than the front ones.
- Both sidesChew evenly. A denture has no roots, so balance is what holds it still.
- Stay hydratedDentures can reduce saliva. Water through the day, and less caffeine and alcohol.
Caring for them, and when to come back
Clean them daily. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush designed for dentures and a non-abrasive denture cleaner — regular toothpaste is too harsh. Rinse thoroughly after eating to remove debris and prevent stains.
Soak them overnight. Dentures need to stay moist to retain their shape. Lukewarm water or a denture-cleaning solution, never hot water, which warps them. If yours have metal components, ask which solution to use.
Handle them with care. Clean them over a soft towel or a basin of water, hold them gently, and never force them into place.
Keep up your own hygiene. Brush your gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth daily. With partial dentures, care for the natural teeth as advised.
Come back if the fit changes. Looseness or shifting while speaking or eating, gum irritation or sores, changes in facial appearance, or persistent discomfort all mean the denture needs adjusting or replacing.
